EMDR is used in the treatment of: PTSD, Sexual Abuse, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Grief, Depression, Addictions, Anger, Eating Disorders, Body Image Problems, Pain, Phobias, OCD, Sleep Problems, Low Self-Esteem etc.
EMDR is an evidence based therapy that can help with everything from…having less anxiety when playing your favorite sport…to helping you be able to emotionally function in life again after developing complex PTSD from years of abuse.
It is truly amazing to see the brain scans that have been done on people after experiencing just a handful of EMDR sessions because the trauma activity in the brain is usually drastically lower than before. During EMDR Therapy your therapist will use bilateral stimulation (some examples of this: eye movements, manual tapping, hand held tappers, a light bar etc.) to help your brain process through the stuck negative cognitions/life experiences/traumatic events in your nervous system.
The bilateral stimulation that will happen during your EMDR session is very similar to what happens during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep at night when you are dreaming and processing through things…you of course will not be asleep during EMDR Therapy.😉
There are different phases to EMDR and when you first meet with your therapist they will of course want to know a little bit about you (get some history of what you have experienced in your life/any medical conditions you may have), and will show you the beginning phases of EMDR which is relaxation and resource development to help your body learn great emotional grounding techniques.
